CISCO ESTABLISHES CO-INNOVATION, CYBERSECURITY CENTERS
Photo shows Cisco executives explaining the core of the collaboration center
WORKPLACE collaboration and cybersecurity deployment are pivotal to digital transformation. These processes are, according to study “Ready, Steady, Unsure: Technology Perspective into Asia Pacific’s Readiness for Digital Transformation” crucial for digital transformation success.
Global technology leader Cisco launched last February 15 its Co-Innovation Center and Cybersecurity Center of Excellence in Singapore. The two centers are designed to catalyze digital innovation and development responding to the findings of the study which Cisco commissioned.
The opening of the centers is also in line with the focus areas of Singapore’s Digital Economy Framework for Action and will be the jump off point for deployment of its technology to the South East Asia, Pacific and Japanese markets.
The Cisco Co-Innovation Center, the company’s first in Southeast Asia, and 14th globally, will bring together customers, industry partners, start-ups, application developers, accelerators, government organizations and universities to work on problems unique to the region, with a particular focus on cybersecurity and the Internet of Things (IoT).
The Cisco Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (CCX) will expand Cisco’s threat intelligence research and security incident response capabilities in the Asia Pacific region. The CCX comprises a new Talos threat intelligence headquarters and Cisco Security Operations Center (SOC) that will partner with government, industry, and universities to improve national cybersecurity posture and grow regional talent.
The two new facilities provide physical and virtual laboratories for proof of concept development, experimentation and testing. The media were exposed to the various collaboration processes on the ground showing Cisco’s might in the two spheres of IT.
One demo showcased IoT applications at the Port of Rotterdam. This involves the building of a digital twin that helps manage the whole port from docking to unloading, even up to knowing the salinity of the water which affects ship’s buoyancy. In another demo, a multi-layer transport management solution using big data was presented while in a third one the use of Cisco technology as predictive analytics was demonstrated to avoid robot downtime.
Also shown to media was the ease at which Cisco people work together via messaging, calling, transfer of ideas over an interactive whiteboard, meet and file-share with Cisco Webex Teams. Examples of the various ways to schedule a meeting and to share a file were presented.
Another powerful collaboration idea is the “Huddle Space.” A small set-up for up to five people, it is effective for implementing important ad-hoc meetings. Ad hoc meetings, according to Cisco SVP Engineering, CTO and Chief Architect David Ward, is an important “firestarter” for ideas. Replying to a question from Malaya Business Insight, Ward said that if “you do not catch that first spark of the idea quickly enough, you just might lose it.”
Huddle space was designed to catch these ideas with easy sharing of content on a regular plasma screen, whereby the experience is the same in the office as remotely via Cisco Webex.
The Center’s Customer Innovation rooms offer a space to co-create and prototype new solutions will be located within Cisco’s new office 80,000 square foot office space at Mapletree Business City II. With an open plan designed for the collaborative future of work, the Cisco Singapore office is designed to facilitate creative “accidental collisions” to ensure that it delivers on its innovation promise.
“Cisco’s Co-Innovation Center and Cybersecurity Center of Excellence will not only build new digital capabilities in Singapore for the Asia Pacific region, but also provide opportunities for Singaporeans to work with the best minds in Cisco and its partners to create new and innovative solutions that enable and secure digital transformation in different industries,” Chng Kai Fong, Managing Director of Singapore’s Economic Development Board said in this congratulatory address to Cisco.
“At Cisco, we build the bridge between hope and possibility. This is only possible when innovative technology and imaginative people come together around a common purpose. Innovation no longer happens behind the closed doors of R&D labs, but in open ecosystems. By fostering local and global partnerships, Cisco is leading innovation in cutting edge technology solutions that will create a better future for the region,” Irving Tan, Senior Vice President and Chief of Operations at Cisco said.
Cisco's Innovation Centers serve as hubs for open innovation, bringing together communities of customers, partners, start-ups, accelerators, governments, universities and research communities to foster the exploration and development of new technologies.
5G has a faster deployment pace than other RATs in terms of commercial use. It is the first time during the past nearly 40 years that, 5G networks and terminals for large-scale commercial use are simultaneously mature. It takes 10 years for 3G worldwide users to reach 500 million users, 5 years for 4G, and will be 3 years for 5G.
5G will develop in larger-scale, and wider-ranging. It is estimated that, in 2019, over 50 countries will allocate 5G spectrum resources, over 60 operators will deploy 5G on a large scale, and over 40 types of commercial 5G terminals will be available. 5G will develop several times or even dozens of times faster than existing RATs, with a larger deployment scale and more users to experience 5G. The first wave of 5G commercialization will cover a third of the global population, greatly exceeding the scale of 3G or 4G.
Huawei has obtained more than 30 commercial contracts and delivered over 40,000 sites. It is an urgent need of operators to reduce the cost per bit of the network while providing the eMBB ultimate experience to the consumer.
It has become an industry consensus that large-scale deployment of Massive MIMO . Currently 95% of commercial shipments are Massive-MIMO(64T64R and 32T32R).
Yang Chaobin, President of Huawei's 5G Product Line, claimed that "We are setting a new record in the history of mobile communications. 5G will develop in a fast-paced, large-scale, and wide-ranging way. 2019 is expected to be the year of 5G large-scale commercialization, and Huawei 5G Simplified Solution will help operators build 5G network with superior performance and user experience, simplified and fast deployment."
The 5G Simplified Solution enables simplified site
The 5G Simplified solution is oriented to diversified deployment scenarios such as traditional macro, antenna limited, street hotspots, and indoor. It contains serialized 5G Massive MIMO, Book RRU, LampSite, etc. The most innovative of these is the blade AAU.
5G Blade AAU supports all RATs and frequency bands, and integrates active and passive antennas. Blade AAU greatly simplified the antenna, efficient use of site resources and help operators reduce high site operating costs. It meets the installation requirements of the existing sites with its height of 2 meters.Blade AAU makes the 5G boutique network deployment extremely convenient. Due to the integration of low-frequency antenna operators can easily complete 2G/3G/4G modernization and build a Multi-RATs network with the best experience to realize MBB low cost.
In conjunction with the blade AAU, Huawei also launches an outdoor blade BBU, which is combined with blade power to form a 5G super blade site. The super blade site has the characteristics of full outdoor and modularization. It can make full use of the existing site resources, reduce the dependence of the 5G deployment on the site resources, realize the “one pole one site”, free the equipment room and air-conditioner, and greatly reduce the site operating cost.
The 5G Simplified Solution enables Simplified architecture:
At the beginning of 5G deployment, when operators choose the 5G network architecture, they generally face the choice of NSA (non-standalone) or SA (standalone). In addition to the consideration of the network architecture itself, the operators also concerns whether the NSA and the SA terminal can simultaneously access a 5G network.
From a network perspective, the radio access network to the core network, 3GPP defines a complete standard interface. The 5G base station support both NSA and SA architectures. The same core network platform can also support 4G EPC and 5G Core at the same time. From the perspective of the terminal, the NSA and SA terminals can access the same 5G network at the same time, and complex signaling and data processing are left to the network for processing.
Therefore, NSA or SA is no longer a dilemma for operators. The same 5G network, the two architectures coexist harmoniously, and the NSA base station can be smoothly evolved to the SA base station through software upgrade.
2019 is expected to be the year of 5G large-scale commercialization. Only Simplified Solution can handle the complex and diverse deployment environments. Huawei's 5G simplified solution at the World Mobile Congress enables deployment of the full scenario, building the ultimate network performance and user experience, and reducing site operating cost.

Photo shows members of the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) with participants at the DOTr plus UNDP review meeting
WITH the advent of electric, hybrid and other alternative fuel vehicles, it would be best if the country is ready for their eventual mass introduction into the Philippine market. This was the gist of what Department of Transportation Usec. Mark de Leon, OIC for Road Transport and Infrastructure told participants of a recent workshop that reviewed the low carbon urban transport system project partly funded by the United Nations Development Programme.
“We are happy that with us now are the stakeholders themselves from both the public and private sectors who can advise us on how we can improve and best implement the project”, he said. “Some 54 experts covering nine sectors are with us as we review the project to ensure that the project’s activities are still aligned with the priorities of the government and the private sector as well. The government, manufacturers and assemblers of low carbon vehicles, alternative fuel providers, battery solution providers, financial institutions, fleet and transport operators, transport-related NGOs and even the academe are well represented here, thus we are assured that the project is in good and capable hands”.
The UNDP-funded Low Carbon Urban Transport System Project aims to create an enabling environment for the commercialization of low carbon urban transport system in the Philippines. This is through the propagation of environmentally-sustainable transport such as electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and vehicles powered by alternative fuel sources like LPG, CNG and solar.
Ms. Floradema Eleazar of the UNDP says that the project hopes to help increase the utilization of indigenous, renewable energy to assure energy security to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. “The project will promote the development, transfer, dissemination and diffusion of environmentally-sound technologies. And we see that urban transport will play a very big role in helping achieve the country’s GHG emission reduction aspirations”.
The workshop participants saw the need for the project to improve in ten areas such as in scientific literature, research and data, information and communications strategy, inter-agency coordination within the government, raising grassroots awareness of low carbon transport solutions, LGU capability to draft local transportation plans, pushing for legislation for fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, industry standards for parts, vehicles, performance and testing protocols, a strong supply chain for products, parts and services outside of Metro Manila, retail, capex and opex financing and the linkage between research organizations and the sources of development funds.
Usec. De Leon says that the DOTr is very happy with the results of the workshop. “With the valuable inputs of the stakeholders, we are now in a better position to strengthen the project so we can launch this project off to a good start this coming 2019. With both the public and private sectors deeply involved, the Duterte Administration is determined to make this project a successful one so that ultimately, we will not be caught flat-footed when the technology is brought into our country. And with the rapid advancements in modern technology, we expect it to be sooner than later”.
DISRUPTING the hospitality industry in the Philippines is RedDoorz, a tech-enabling company that provides budget accommodations through an app. Different from Agoda or AirBnb which are simply booking apps, RedDoorz actually helps run a hotel chain using its platform.
RedDoorz managing a wide network of properties without directly owning a single property through an app and a series of software-enabled service for partners including local boutique hotels, inns, apartels, condotels and other privately-owned accommodations that meet its requirements which in turn standardizes the budget hotel experience through all its branches.
This experience means four star-level quality, consistency and convenience at economy price points. Doing so positions itself as a strong contender in a competitive market for affordable accommodations such as the Philippines.
“We’re trying to solve the problem of this unnamed, unbranded, small, mom and pop hotel, and there are lots of them. We are solving the problem for them, trying to give them the brand, technology and training,” RedDoorz COO Rishabh Singhi in an interview after a press conference in one of RedDoorz prime hotels in Quezon City.
Singhi one of the co-founders of the hotelier platform-as-a-service says that the idea came out of personal bad experiences from booking just based on photos, a price and a review.
“I have personally experienced many horror stories about booking a room and not getting what the app contract states. Simply things like hot water or toiletries. Or an assurance of a good night’s sleep…how can that happen if the room you rent is beside a train station?” Singhi explained.
Through the RedDoorz app and website, customers gain access to flexible payment options including credit cards, DragonPay (via bank transfer and 7-Eleven outlets) and pay at hotel without credit card guarantee. It also incentivizes repeat guests with the RedCash rewards system and exclusive discounts and partner deals through RedClub membership.
“The point of RedDoorz is this. To maintain a consistent management philosophy and branding among its hotels, we want to ensure our customers the best quality rooms and facilities at competitive price points. This means to be more open to the new age millennial customer and to have the kind of services that the customers are expecting,” Singhi stressed.
Property owners aligned with RedDoorz are very happy with the partnership.
“RedDoorz was able to boost my hotel booking and get more revenue, now I can maximize the potential of my property when it comes to sales and occupancy. It actually tripled our income. That’s because of the marketing strategy of RedDoorz,” Diana Goldsberg, owner of the RedDoorz near Arca South explained as she also highlights the Partner Loyalty Program.
Under the Partner Loyalty Program, RedDoorz works with its property managers and executives to train hotel staff and hone their hospitality knowledge and skills. The program aims to increase staff’s morale and sense of belonging to boost their performance and sharpen their communication skills. Activities that are included in the program are English courses for staff for better interaction with customers, weekly Fridays meals and so on.
As part of RedDoorz’ online booking platform, partners increase their property visibility not just in the country but all over the world. Property reviews within the site and in all its other channels help in generating interest and gaining credibility for its offerings. The company is also able to manage demand and optimize pricing through its network of hotels to maximize revenue potential.
“With RedDoorz, first, you are working with a very dynamic team. That’s very important. Second, is the reliability of the company. And thirdly, we’ve just started and we’ve already seen the positive impact. The things we were not able to get before, they completely turned around in a week’s time,” Kate Capulong, owner and General Manager of RedDoorz Premium @ Sta. Rosa - Tagaytay Road said.
Since its official launch in mid-2018, RedDoorz Philippines has already expanded to more than 100 properties in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Davao, Pampanga and Tagaytay. This year it aims to reach 1,500 properties by the end of the fourth quarter building on its current property count of over 680, eyeing a larger share of Southeast Asia’s growing online travel market which Google predicts will zoom to $76B by 2025.
“These hotels normally operate very low-tech, whereas RedDoorz operates on a high-tech platform,” Singhi explains adding that the technology saves partners a lot of time and money because buying such a system like RedDoorz is very expensive. Our partners get access to this technology, and the training on how to use it at really no cost,” Singhi explained.
