Techsauceph started as a blog I had in 2002 on Blogger.com called Tech SOS. Being some kind of handyman I gave tips on how to fix things like handling SCSI connections, updating the Mac from 110V to 220V with just one wire, and other such sorceries.
I am Raymond Gregory Tribdino and I am a journalist. I started writing tech in 1999 when it was not yet too fashionable through a column in the late Cip Roxas' newspaper, the Philippine Post. It was a short lived paper but I had enough IT exposure to ensure continuity years after.
Before I wrote tech, I covered the Calabarzon for BusinessWorld from 1994 to 1999. The visionary Raul Locsin already knew that the Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon economic corridor was going to be big. And BusinessWorld was the first one in that frontier territory.
My IT background and programming skills came in handy when in 1995 BusinessWorld set up BusinessWorld Online, the first online publication in the country. I did double duties as correspondent and web programmer. It was a time when text had to be inserted between brackets.
Also working for BusinessWorld, Mr. Locsin discovered my passion for cars after I fixed his Pajero which was not cranking up. I primed the fuel pump manually and it was alive. I asked him to tell his driver to fill up and we bled the system. That afternoon he "ordered" me to write for motoring.
Midway through this journey I wrote between IT and motoring having columns in various newspapers and magazines.
This is my blog. I have been on the Internet since 1995--when I joined BusinessWorld Online with Mike Marasigan. BWorld Online was way ahead of its time--the first local newspaper on the web. I was trained in the early versions of .html.
In 1999 I was information technology columnist at the now defunct Philippine Post. I ran a weekly column called "Post Bytes," even before IT was fashionable. I continued to write until after the Y2K ended, and was one of the few writers who came to the conclusion that it was going to be a huge farce.
I worked for two car companies--Nissan (2002 to 2010) and Chery (2010-2014) I came back to writing in 2014--after Malaya Publisher Jake Macasaet invited me to do the newspaper's information technology section and redo the online version.
My kumpare Conrad Carino and I ran one of the first automotive websites "Carz.ph." in 2002. I had a series of blogs in Tumblr, Multiply and Blogspot, but I couldn't sustain these due to time constraints.
When you marry your best friend there are many benefits.
It is said that parenting these days is very different. But based on the way our own parents raised us, it seems to be equally difficult whatever generation one is born into. Each generation has its own "technology" breaker--the television, video player and telephone for our generation, the gaming consoles and cellphones for our millennial children and mobile devices for our youngest kids. Technology is both a friend and a foe for today's parents. Let's all see how we can help each other survive this generation, and the next one.
We cannot escape technology. It is the great deluge of comfort and curses. But if we treat technology as it is--a cold and unyielding tool--and humans as they are--people with hearts and feelings--we strike what I believe is an excellent formula for life in the digital age.
We are Gen X, Baby Boomer parents raising Gen Y "millennials" and Gen Z "strawberry" children. These are but labels sociologists and marketers put on generations to create differentiations and definitions. Right or wrong these category names do create an understanding of who they are, what they want and how they do things in this age of tech.
We as parents are past the mid-life stage filled with discoveries, guided by experiences and fraught by crisis which can only serve to strengthen rather than destroy relationships. This honest revelation to my mind only confirms what I already know. Nothing beats family.
